THE CIGARETTE BURN

It might have taken weeks. At the Quai des Orfèvres that morning everybody was exhausted, with a bad taste in the mouth. Some of them, like Maigret, had had three or four hours’ sleep. Others, who lived in the suburbs, had not slept at all.

Some of them were still up there, searching the Grandes-Carrières district, guarding the Métro stations, watching the men who came out of the houses.

“Did you sleep well, Superintendent?”

It was young Rougin, full of beans, even more vivacious than usual, who had hailed Maigret in the corridor in his high-pitched, slightly metallic voice. He seemed particularly cheerful this morning, and it was only when he saw the paper the young man worked for that the superintendent understood why. He too had taken a risk. The day before, already, and again during the evening, and finally while the three or four of them had been harrying Maigret at the Quai des Orfèvres, he had suspected the truth.

He had no doubt spent the remainder of the night in questioning various people, particularly hotelkeepers. In any case, his paper carried a big headline:
